Doing a quick web-search for the origins of 'Mens pristina mansit', I was staggered to find that the motto derives from Ovid's Metamorphoses - from the story of Callisto, transformed into a she-bear but still aware of her past identity. LinkExternal link You have to wonder at the scholarliness of past generations - but then The Bear was once a coaching inn by the old Bath Road, and its patrons were the idle classes of the 18th century.

Having said all that, I've noticed that The Bear is a favourite inn name in this part of England (try Wantage, or Marlborough). In earlier times the name must have had more to do with bear-baiting than it ever had to do with Ovid.
