The Lewisham Dutch Elm
The Lewisham Dutch Elm
Ironically this "Dutch Elm" seems to be more resistant to Dutch Elm Disease than the so called English Elm. The tall tree is the only known example of the Dutch Elm cultivar in the U.K. It even has its own Facebook site LinkExternal link It has large leaves similar to the Wych Elm that is also less susceptible to the Dutch Elm fungus. As the English Elm almost never sets seed in our climate but reproduces vegetatively it was probably introduced into Britain in prehistory, so technically is probably a non-native species.
