Hoverlloyd hovercraft arriving at Pegwell Bay
The Hoverlloyd 'Swift' hovercraft at the hoverport at Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate. 'Swift' was one of four craft operated by Hoverlloyd, the others being named 'Sure', 'Sir Christopher' and 'The Prince of Wales'. The Hoverport at Pegwell Bay was built in 1969 and provided a cross-channel service to Calais until the end of the 1982 season when it ceased. The rising cost of aviation kerosene in the late 1970s made the hovercraft increasingly uneconomic, also the closure of the British Hovercraft Corporation meant that maintenance became expensive.
