Fountains Hall
House built between 1598 and 1611 in the Renaissance style. It was built for Sir Stephen Proctor who had purchased the Fountains Estate in 1597 and whose father, Thomas, had been had been a successful entrepreneur and had obtained a patent for the use of a mixture of charcoal, coal and peat to smelt iron and lead. Now owned by the National Trust, the house is Grade I listed, with the steps and gate piers being separately grade II listed - see LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link respectively.
