Old mine workings at the foot of Carriers' Hill
The A689 can be seen (half right) winding up to Killhope Cross - see NY7943 : Slate Hill - where it is the highest A road in England. See also NY7943 : Snowfields at Killhope Cross (photographed by Andrew Smith). Just to the left of the penultimate bend in the road is Bank Foot, which lies on the 600 m contour; at only just under 2,000 ft, this must surely be the highest occupied dwelling in England.
NY8243 : Killhope Wheel A recreation of the lead mine that was worked here from 1853-1910. The waterwheel that is a centrepiece was constructed in the 1870s. The site is now a prize-winning museum and hands-on education centre for children about 'times past'.
