M40 Motorway
M40 Motorway
Southbound on the M40 between Junctions 14 and 13 as you rarely see it. This image was taken during a rolling road block; the vehicle shown had slowed all the southbound traffic to allow debris from a collision to be removed from the carriageway. A rolling road block is used in order to provide a safe working zone for the maintenance staff while still allowing traffic to keep moving; this prevented the need to close the motorway completely resulting in the least possible delay to traffic.

I should add that as the collision involved the central barrier a second rolling block took place on the opposite carriageway, giving workers the space to effect a temporary repair to the barrier. A full repair would have been made that night.
