I first came to Avebury many years ago, in the days before motorways, when the journey from London was a slow one along the A4. Avebury was then just a farming village like any other, not a tourist attraction. I was intrigued by the cosy way the village mingled with the stone circles, and the careless way the Swindon-Devizes road kinked its way through.

To put it another way, hundreds of generations had not been much troubled by the need to respect what is now a World Heritage Site (and a place of pilgrimage for latter-day pagans). It could even be that people settled here because the stones amounted to a useful quarry LinkExternal link

Many of the great sarsen stones are missing from the eastern side of the main circle, and sarsen is much used for building in villages for miles around.

The photo shows the 'cosier' aspect of the henge, with buildings around the farmyard at Manor Farm. and the church tower beyond.
