Fallen leaf of wild service tree, Churchland Lane
The wild service, or chequer tree, (Sorbus torminalis) has distinctively shaped leaves that turn a variety of colours in the autumn including a rich crimson like this one. A scarce native of ancient woods and hedgerows, spotting the leaves on the ground is often the easiest way of locating the parent tree.
