SU1069 : Standing stone at the southern entrance to Avebury

taken 1 year ago, near to Avebury, Wiltshire, Great Britain

Standing stone at the southern entrance to Avebury
Standing stone at the southern entrance to Avebury
One of the more massive stones in the outer ('Great') circle, standing just east of the A4361.

At Avebury part of the village lies within the stone circle - including the 'Red Lion', seen in this picture. I think it's worth saying that over the years I have visited megalithic sites right across southern Britain (from Kent to Cornwall and Pembrokeshire) and Avebury is the only substantial site to have been encroached upon by later settlement.
