Stone marking the Greenwich Meridian, East Grinstead
This ironstone block outside the East Grinstead council offices at East Court was supposedly positioned in 2000 on the Greenwich Meridian, zero longitude. However, online maps show it sixty or so metres to the east. Before widespread use of GPS and satellite technology the precise location of the zero longitude was difficult to determine precisely and this may count for the apparent anomaly. The 'Prime Meridian' is etched on the stone and visitors are encouraged to touch to show the effect of wear by human agency over time.
