This plant > LinkExternal link can commonly be found in the south of England, being less abundant in the north. It is described as being one of the most cosmopolitan of wild plants, extending almost over the whole globe. In Britain it can often be seen by the wayside, on rubbish heaps, among growing crops and in damp and shady places. It is sometimes called the Garden Nightshade, because it often also occurs in cultivated ground. The plant has a tradition of having been used in traditional medicine: the fresh leaves were pounded and used externally to treat infections and weeping wounds. The plant's alkaloids, especially solanine, are also common ingredients in modern medicine. This species' reputation of being very poisonous has recently been disputed. In experiments carried out on dogs widely varying results have been obtained, which were explained by the fact that the active principle, Solanine, on which the poisonous properties of this species depend, and which exists in considerable quantity in the fresh herb, varies very much at different seasons. Some members of the Solanum family are highly toxic, but others, including tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers and tobacco are widely used.
