Common Mallow (Malva sylvestris)
Common Mallow (Malva sylvestris)
The Common mallow can grow almost anywhere, in normal, clay or sandy soils in a number of different locations including woods, lawns, ditches, river banks, fallow fields and even within the cracks of a city sidewalk or near housing foundations. Mallow was eaten as a vegetable by the Romans, who considered a dish of marsh mallow as a delicacy. The Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder suggested that the use of mallow juice on a daily basis prevented any type of illness. All parts, including the leaves, can be used as a mild laxative and a diuretic.
