Norwich: Bishopgate, St Helen's tower and the Great Hospital
The nearby information board explains that the Great Hospital was founded in the late 13th century as “a hospital for elderly clergy, poor scholars and the sick poor. The mediaeval hospital buildings [behind the church] and layout resemble those of a monastery or priory and are set around one of the smallest cloisters in England ... Today the Great Hospital continues to provide sheltered housing and care for the citizens of Norwich. It is the only English mediaeval hospital whose archives and fabric together survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries”.
