The Inchgreen area is named after Inch Green, which was, as the name suggests, an island; it was centred on NS31007524, and all of its former surface is now part of the mainland, though its northern edge was very close to the present-day shoreline. The island measured about 260 metres EW, and a little less NS. The western end was roughly where the high overgrown ground is, behind and to the left of the crane, in this picture. The houses in the right background are on what was once part of the island.

In the 1830s, the island had a powder house on it. By the time the first-edition OS map was surveyed in 1857, the island was simply labelled "Inch". The OS Name Books for Renfrewshire (185657) have the following entry for it, which, while not mentioning the "Green" element of the earlier name, does explain its significance:

"Inch: a small island wholly surrounded by water at high tide. The surface of which is good pasture land. On it is an old powder house in ruins."
