Common Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica) > LinkExternal link is a member of the daisy family and is common and widespread throughout much of England and Wales but it is rare in northern England. It prefers damp and open habitats such as water meadows and fens but can also be found growing along water courses, lakes and ponds. Its name is derived from the fact that if burnt, the smoke repels fleas and other insects. The bruised leaves are said to smell similar to soap. In former times, fleabane was used for treating dysentery.

Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) > LinkExternal link prefers chalky soil but can also be found beside rivers in mildy acid areas, where it grows, with its roots in the water, in the vicinity of ponds and lakes. The colour of its flowers varies from white to pink and deep purple.
