NT1367 : Columnar Microgabbro

taken 1 year ago, near to Wilkieston, West Lothian, Great Britain

Columnar Microgabbro
Columnar Microgabbro
Gabbro has the same chemical composition as basalt, but a much coarser texture because it has cooled more slowly. The Dalmahoy Sill is intermediate in texture, and forms columns similar to those formed by basalt. The columns are revealed here on the upper part of Dalmahoy Hill, partly thanks to quarrying. The foreground is grazing land.
