Panoramic view of Loch Beag and Loch na nArd Doiriu, Galway
This panoramic view (looking northwards) shows two somewhat remote lakes. The lake at the left of the image is Loch Beag (Gaelic: Small Lake) which is a ubiquitous name for many Irish lakes. A streamlet flows from Loch Beag into the lake visible at the right of image, Loch na nArd Doiriu, which probably translates as the lake of the oakwood heights? The abhainn Bhoth Loiscthe river runs into this lake at its North Eastern end. This seems a curious name for the river as the more apt name, abhainn na nArd doiriu, also refers to the same river but only further up in the hill country above the lake. The main abhainn Bhoth Loiscthe river, descends also from the hills above but runs circa 0.5 km west of Loch Beag and then flows southwards to enter Loch Bhoth Loiscithe circa 4km from here (i.e 4 km directly behind the photographer's position).
