The dinosaur (and other animal) sculptures in Crystal Palace Park were made by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, under the guidance of Sir Richard Owen - palaeontologist, comparative anatomist and founding director of the Natural History Museum.

The sculptures were made in 1854 - five years before the publication of 'The Origin of Species' - a useful reminder that fossils had been a matter of intense interest for a century or more before Darwin published his book. Indeed, Erasmus Darwin - Charles's grandfather - was convinced of the reality of evolution, though it was the grandson who first proposed the mechanism which has provided the basis for modern evolutionary thinking.
