The Swan at Lavenham, 100 High Street, Lavenham
Variously Grade 1, Grade II and Grade II* Listed hotel. Unusually, the building has five listings, being an amalgamation of many buildings. In the picture are Grade II* listed sections, the left portion formerly 102 High Street incorporated into the inn is a 15th or 16th century building. First listed in 1958 this part must have been incorporated before the last update in July 1980. The right hand part with the north and south cross wings is of 14th or 15th century date and the original inn. The first probable recorded innkeeper is John Newton 1544 and then mentioned at the Swan, John Girling in 1667. Sale particulars in 1863 describe the inn as '...with the very extensive stabling & premises, including a Butcher's Shop...' The hotel has records of part of the buildings back to 1425. In the 18th century, stagecoaches left from the Swan taking people to London. Currently owned by TA Hotel Collection Limited who bough the hotel in the early 2000s from a hotel chain called MacDonalds who in turn bought it from the Trusthouse Forte group. In the Airmen's Bar, inscribed on the wall, is the 1940s boot record made by nearly 1000 members of various UK regiments but mostly the 487th Bombardment Group of the 8th US Army Air Force. The American band leader Glen Miller is said to have stopped at the hotel for a drink before setting out on his last fateful flight. Thankfully a chimney fire in October 2016 was contained by fire crews from Sudbury, Great Cornard and Bury St Edmunds.
