Scarborough Pier, N. Yorks.
Scarborough’s lighthouse on Vincent’s Pier was built in the C18th and named after its engineer, William Vincent. Whilst the current lantern room was constructed in the 1980s, the rest of the tower, plus the spiral staircase date from reconstruction work in 1931. The last time that the lighthouse was fully staffed i.e. for a 24-hour watch, was in 1997. Now the lighthouse is only staffed during the summer season. The harbour master is now personally responsible for the permanent supervision of the lighthouse, in addition to his harbour oversight role. The duties of the seasonal lighthouse staff, who are known as Tidal Officers, include checking that all boats are berthed safely and they also operate the pier bridge and the foghorn whenever necessary.
