Yellow and Black Cardinal Mark in St Mawes Harbour
A cardinal mark is a sea mark (a buoy) used in maritime pilotage to indicate the position of a hazard and the direction of safe water. The safe direction is indicated by the pattern of triangles at the top of the buoy. In this case, the both triangles are pointing down indicating that it is a "south" cardinal mark and the vessels should pass to the south of the buoy (for further information, see diagram at LinkExternal link ).
