Shire Hall, Monmouth
A magnificent centrepiece for the town - 'A mighty affair' says John Newman in the Gwent Pevsner. Dating from 1724 and thought to be by an otherwise unknown architect, Fisher of Bristol, the design owes much to the Baroque of Wren, Vanburgh or Hawksmoor. Another claimant for the design could have been Philip Fisher, a local man whose portrait is in the building. However, he would have been just 22 in 1724.
