Tunnels under Littlestone Road, New Romney
Tunnels under Littlestone Road, New Romney
Looking towards Dungeness from the footbridge at the south end of New Romney station. These tunnels beneath Littlestone Road govern the maximum height of rolling stock on the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. Some locomotives visiting from the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, one of Britain's other major 15" gauge railways, have been a tight fit: "River Irt" just made it through (though some clearances were down to a quarter of an inch), but "Lady Wakefield" had its air horns knocked off. The pub visible on the far side of Littlestone Road is the Captain Howey Hotel, named after John Edwards Presgrave Howey, who founded the railway.
