Thomas Hardy's Croquet Lawn
Thomas Hardy's Croquet Lawn
Before finding fame and wealth as a writer, Thomas Hardy trained as a builder and architect. The house and garden at Max Gate, where he lived until 1928, are to his own designs.
I was told that Max Gate or Mack's Gate was a toll gate on the nearby road out of Dorchester around the time when Hardy acquired the land.
