Orange Balsam (Impatiens capensis)
Orange Balsam (Impatiens capensis)
This plant is native to North America and also known as common jewelweed, spotted jewelweed and spotted touch-me-not. It prefers damp places and can commonly be found growing on canal and river banks. The orange flowers > LinkExternal link have large reddish-brown spots and are shaped like an old policeman's helmet, with an incurved spur. Impatiens capensis was brought to Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the first record of the plant outside of cultivation dating from 1822 (in Surrey). There has since been a steady expansion into semi-natural habitats, which still continues. Interestingly, the Norfolk population originated from an independent introduction to a tributary of the Bure near Aylsham in 1927.

The juice of the leaves and stems of Orange balsam is a traditional Native American remedy for treating skin rashes.
