NS2874 : Bomb crater

taken 1 year ago, near to Greenock, Inverclyde, Great Britain

Bomb crater
Bomb crater
The vegetation makes it harder to discern from a photograph that this is a neat circular pit. Note the old trough on the far (western) side.

There are probably other craters in the area; I encountered this one soon after leaving the track that is marked on the map.
Bomb craters above Greenock :: NS2673
The Greenock Blitz was in May 1941: NS2676 : Memorial for those killed in the Greenock air raids. Some of the bomb craters on the moors above the town are the result of several decoy fires that were deployed here during the Second World War; see LinkExternal link (at Secret Scotland) for details. The control bunker for one of those decoy sites (NS2773 : Whitelees Moor - Bombing Decoy Control Bunker) can be seen at NS27567342, and there were other decoys on these moors.
