NS2873 : Air shaft

taken 1 year ago, 3 km from Greenock, Inverclyde, Great Britain

Air shaft
Air shaft
The unnatural appearance of this mound drew me to it from the other side: NS2873 : The mound of an air shaft.

The 1:25000 map shows a line of shafts across the moor. For the next two air shafts in sequence to the south, see NS2873 : Air vent and NS2872 : Air Vent on Burnhead Moor (the second of these was later modified in appearance, in line with the others: NS2872 : Covered air shaft).

On the same line, but north of the one shown in the present picture, is, not an air shaft, but a water shaft: NS2874 : Water shaft / NS2874 : Water shaft.

The air shafts and the water shaft are both related to water works.
