The Shambles, Monmouth
The Shambles, Monmouth
Monmouth owes much its present appearance to the work of local man George Vaughan Maddox, a surprisingly sophisticated provincial architect at the dawn of the Victorian era with a mastery of the Neoclassical. His grandest work is Priory Street, laid out in 1837 but now somewhat diminished after a major fire in 1963. Below street level Maddox provided a remarkable market, the 24 arched Shambles on a terrace above the Monnow. The arches lead to barrel vaulted chambers which provided storage, stabling, butchery and fresh produce premises.

The 1960s replacement of the fire damaged buildings, seen in the distance, are not worthy of comment. Lovers of Brutalism and the 1960s will doubtless disagree.
