Mullein has a long history as a medicinal herb used in various disorders. Its traditional uses were for treating respiratory disorders including asthma, coughs and tuberculosis. The plant is also known to have been used to treat haemorrhoids, burns, bruises, and gout. The yellow flowers once were used as a source of yellow hair dye. In Appalachia, the plant was reputedly used to treat colds and the boiled root administered for croup. An oil derived from the flowers has been used to soothe earaches. The dried stems of the plant, soaked with resin or wax, are said to have been used as candles or torches.
