Small scabious (Scabiosa columbaria)
Small scabious (Scabiosa columbaria)
This flower > LinkExternal link can be confused with Field scabious > LinkExternal link but it is shorter, more slender and less hairy, and the individual florets making up the flower head have five instead of four petal-lobes. It can be found growing in dry, unimproved calcareous soils, including meadows and pastures, embankments and slopes as well as chalk pits and limestone quarries, where the sward is short and open.
