Common restharrow (Ononis repens)
Common restharrow (Ononis repens)
This plant > LinkExternal link can be found on grassland, particularly chalk and limestone grassland and can frequently be found near the coast, but inland as well in England and southern Scotland. The plant's common name dates from the time when it was considered a common agricultural weed; its roots are so tough and dense that they would entangle the farmer's horse-pulled harrow and bring it to a halt.

Restharrow root has a long history as a medicinal herb and was traditionally highly regarded as a gentle diuretic. The phytochemicals found in the root include the flavonoid ononin and the polyphenols tannin and triterpenes, which act as antioxidants and perhaps explain the plant's reputation for protecting against ageing.
