Thatched cottage, Beadlam
Thatched dwellings are fairly unusual in North Yorkshire, but there are at least two in Beadlam and another six or seven in nearby Pockley, plus others in Harome. This cottage has thatch over limestone walls, whereas the more common roofing in the area is with pantiles. At the edge of the photo is an information board about local 18thC farmer, surveyor and engineer Joseph Foord who was responsible for the construction of water channels from reliable sources on the moors to the villages on the limestone Tabular Hills where water was often scarce. Also mentioned on the board is George Wright, waterman, who helped to maintain the water channels in the late 19thC. Almost all traces of the old channels have now disappeared on the Tabular Hills, having been destroyed by modern agriculture, but it is still possible to trace the channels in the area [eg SE6489, SE6391 etc]
