'The Sill' replaces two buildings at Once Brewed, the former
Youth Hostel NY7566 : Once Brewed Youth Hostel and Northumberland National Park Visitor Centre NY7566 : The Once Brewed National Park Centre.
"The first National Landscape Discovery Centre in the UK, The Sill is designed to provide a base for learning and participation, research and conservation, engagement and fun; acting as a safe entry point for people from all backgrounds and circumstance.
Created by Northumberland National Park Authority with support from partners and funders, including YHA (England & Wales) and the Heritage Lottery Fund, our vision is for our nation's exceptional landscapes, culture and heritage to be enjoyed by as many people as possible.
Designed by Newcastle architects Jane Derbyshire & David Kendal and built by Sir Robert McAlpine the building is inspired by The Great Whin Sill, Northumberland's internationally-renowned geological feature, with diagonal flowing lines echoing the natural undulations and outcrops in the landscape."
Construction of the £14.8m building started in November 2015 and the centre opened on Saturday 29th July 2017.
