"The Scallop", by Maggi Hambling, commemorates Benjamin Britten. Its inscription, "I hear those voices that will not be drowned", is from Britten's "Peter Grimes".
"The Scallop"
"Scallop" (2003), by Maggi Hambling, is a sculpture located on the north beach at Aldeburgh. It commemorates the town's long-standing resident Benjamin Britten and the words that pierce it, "I hear those voices that will not be drowned", come from Britten's "Peter Grimes".
The sculpture's location in a wild, natural environment has caused considerable controversy and the artwork has been vandalised repeatedly. The presence of a large manufactured object in a level natural environment has been seen as incongruous; perhaps to smooth over this discrepancy the public are encouraged to clamber over it as if it were a natural outcrop.
