Wood Hall

This was a medieval moated manor in the valley at the bottom of the field, situated at the subject grid reference. It was demolished in the late 16th century when a new house was built on the hill above where Risley Lodge Farm now stands- visible on the hill top. The site is well mapped in late 19th century OS maps, but has since been ploughed out, although still occasionally visible as crop marks.

The Risley Lanx

In 1729 a Roman salver or lanx was unearthed by a ploughman. It was broken up and distributed among his fellows. Several of the pieces came into the possession of the Lady of the Manor, Lady Aston and these were passed to the eminent antiquarian of the time, William Stukeley, in 1736. He duly recorded them but the pieces themselves then disappear from view.

In 1991 the complete lanx, restored from the fragments, was offered for sale by George Greenhalgh through a London dealer. Extensive tests confirmed its Roman origin and it was sold to an American buyer who donated it to the British Museum.

In 2005 doubts were raised about other antiquities being offered for sale by George Greenhalgh, and subsequent investigation showed that these were forgeries created by his son Shaun. The upshot was that a significant number of 'antiquities' that had been sold by George were shown to be forgeries, among them The Risley Lanx. It had been created by melting down Roman coins, explaining how it had passed the authentication testing.
