Holgate Engineering Works
Holgate Engineering Works
Opened in 1884 as the North Eastern Railway carriage works. It remained in that role through the various successor companies to the North Eastern Railway until eventually it housed British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) York. This was privatised in 1989, with the works being taken over by Swedish-Swiss company ABB. However, this only lasted for around 7 years, with the works closing in 1996. From 1997 to 2002 they were used by US company Thrall for wagon manufacturing. They are currently used by Network Rail for storage and maintenance of rail maintenance trains.
