Marker stone at site of Limekiln House
Marker stone at site of Limekiln House
A recently erected marker stone on the site of the former Limekiln House, once a bustling tavern at the side of the Hambleton drove road. Its heyday must have been well before the introduction of railways, when herds of cattle were brought this way towards the markets of York and beyond. There would be a 'stance' every few miles where beasts could rest and where the drovers could find food and ale. Limekiln House has gone, but Chequers is still there to the north as is Dialstone House to the south, though neither are inns any more.
