Belper: the weirs at Strutt's Mills
Belper: the weirs at Strutt's Mills
The weirs begun in the 1790s created the head of water which drove the water wheels at Jedediah Strutt's cotton mills. The horseshoe weir was built in 1797 and modified and increased in height in 1819 and 1843. The sluices are to the left. In the middle distance are the Riverside Gardens - deserted on this drab August morning. The copper roof of the bandstand shows among the trees.
