Heath dog-violet, Holman Wood Field, Brede High Woods
The heath dog-violet (Viola canina) which, as the name suggests, grows in heathy places, is now rare in East Sussex, mainly due to loss of habitat. The small area of grassy heathland where it flourishes here is part of Brede High Woods owned and managed by the Woodland Trust. It flowers slightly later than other wild violets and has a distinctive pale colour with a creamy white spur.
