Turnpike milepost
Turnpike milepost
Kedleston Road used to be part of the main route from Derby to Manchester. It was turnpiked as far as Brassington in 1738. Over time, better routes over easier country took traffic away and the road dwindled in importance. In 1827, the road beyond Hulland Ward became so disused that it was disturnpiked. This milepost may date from this period, since it displays distances to Derby (4 miles) and Hulland Ward (5 miles).
