The site of the original Sidmouth lifeboat station
The small blue plaque on the wall of this apartment block records that the original lifeboat station stood here from 1869 until 1912, during which time it housed the two boats "Rimington" and "William & Francis". In mid 1881, the Rimington rescued royalty, being Their Royal Highnesses the Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh, after their pinnace The "HMS Lively" did its best to capsize. Sadly, all that now remains of the former station is the stone doorcase above the ground floor entranceway. The Inshore Rescue Boat service now operates from premises a couple of hundred yards to the east.
