SK2781 : Ancient milestone on the Houndkirk Road

taken 2 years ago, 3 km from Totley, Sheffield, Great Britain

Ancient milestone on the Houndkirk Road
Ancient milestone on the Houndkirk Road
Houndkirk Road, a byway open to all traffic, was formerly the turnpike road between Sheffield and Chapel-en-le-Frith/Buxton. The milepost was broken during WWII, possibly used for target practice by troops training in the area, and the top portion was lost until 2013 when it was found in a suburban garden and reunited with the base.
The writing on this face is Tideswell 7, Buxton 16 and, unusually, a skull and crossbones.
