The viaduct was refurbished in a 7m scheme undertaken in 2016, with 68000 bricks replaced and concrete slabs installed beneath the track.

The Grade II listed structure with its 23 spans was designed by George Buck for the Manchester and Birmingham Railway Company and completed in 1841.
