SK4189 : Master and slave, Tinsley Marshalling Yard

taken 47 years ago, near to Brinsworth, Rotherham, Great Britain

Master and slave, Tinsley Marshalling Yard
Master and slave, Tinsley Marshalling Yard
British Rail Class 13 shunting locomotive No. D4501 at Tinsley Marshalling Yard. This 'master and slave' unit was one of three constructed specially for use at this location. Tinsley was a hump yard, and not suitable for a single large locomotive, due to the risk of grounding on the hump. Because powerful locomotives were required, the answer was to permanently couple two Class 08 shunters together, the cab of the 'slave' unit being removed.

A tanker can be seen travelling along the M1 motorway in the far distance.
