SE4990 : Track across the moor

taken 1 year ago, 3 km from Kepwick, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

Track across the moor
Track across the moor
The track heads eastwards from Steeple Cross, its surface covered in pale limestone, which contrasts with the purple heather either side. The limestone on the track has most likely been brought in from nearby limestone quarries, but in this area there's a fine line between acid soils supporting heather and alkaline soils with a grassy cover. The reason for the contrast is the thin layer of calcareous grits which overlie the limestone in patches all the way from Sutton Bank top to Black Hambleton.
