Coastal defences
Coastal defences
The view of large concrete blocks on the sea shore at the foot of the spoil heap from Frances Colliery. It is unclear whether or not the blocks were constructed for the purpose of keeping the sea back and the spoil in position, or were part of the World War II anti tank defences.
The spoil is now covered in sparse grassland and diminutive blackberry bushes - the sea air and the poor soil contributes to the lack of lush vegetation.
The headframe of the colliery NT3193 : Headframe, Francis Colliery can be seen in the distance.
