NO6541 : Old Red Sandstone

Old Red Sandstone
Old Red Sandstone
Whiting Ness is of considerable geological significance. It is made up of Old Red Sandstone, also called Devonian Sandstone; the smooth sandstone of the lower part of the cliff is Lower Old Red Sandstone, while the rough upper part is Upper Old Red Sandstone. The important detail is that the whole of the Middle Devonian, or Middle Old Red Sandstone, is entirely missing, so there is a gap of tens of millions of years in age between the two parts of the cliff. A gap like this in the geological record is called an unconformity.
