Monument, Athelney
Monument, Athelney
Erected in 1801 to commemorate the fort constructed by Alfred the Great and Aethelwold in 878, and from which was, in the words of Michael Wood, "launched the salvation of Wessex and of England" (ST9051 : Memorial near Bratton). The monument was placed on the site of the abbey founded by Alfred in 888. The inscription is largely indecipherable, but can be found online. Grade II listed.
In Alfred's time, Athelney was virtually an island, swamp-like and impenetrable to outsiders, such as the Danes. As a young man, Alfred had hunted in the area and was no stranger to the dangers that lurked therein. The land here has since been comprehensively drained and so has lost much of that character, but perhaps it returns in some small way when it floods, as happens from time to time.
