Seawall and a bit of saltings, Longpole Reach, River Crouch
This stretch of wall was quite late in building, as seawalls go. It is probably early 19th century. It was not on the 1777 Chapman and André map, but was on the Ordnance Survey large scale maps about 100 years later. It inned a quite small bit of marsh (Cuckow Marsh) plus the final bit of the creek north of here, which no map seems to name. The saltings are suffering somewhat from erosion. The first wall facing was probably Kentish Ragstone, if there was any facing at first. This was usually replaced with 'Essex blocks' as required, and these concrete blocks about 1 foot square may be seen here.
