Llangollen Canal north of Burland in Cheshire
Looking north-west through the arch of Lee's Bridge, No 4 across the Llangollen Canal. It is an accommodation Bridge which carries no public access into adjacent fields.

The Llangollen Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal starts by the River Dee at Llantysilio and leads to the main line at Hurleston Junction, a distance of 46 miles, with twenty-one locks. Water is supplied from the River Dee to the canal, and on to Hurleston Reservoir, a source of domestic water supplies. This results in a noticeable flow of water from west to east; unusual in a canal.

The Llangollen Canal was started in 1795, but not completed for many years. It was eventually absorbed by the Shropshire Union Company in 1846.
Accommodation Bridges
When the canals (or railways) were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were often routed in such a way that farmers and other landowners had their land bisected, so bridges had to be provided to allow access to fields on both sides of the canal. These bridges are frequently referred to as accommodation bridges, and however solid and well constructed, often don't lead anywhere except from one field to another.
Bridges on the Llangollen Canal
Navigating west along the Llangollen Canal, bridges are numbered from No 1 near Hurleston Junction through to No 70 at Frankton Junction. Then numbering restarts at No 1 from Frankton Junction, while the sequence from No 71 onwards continues south along the Montgomery Canal.
In recent years, those west of Frankton have been given a W suffix to their number, so Rowson's Bridge No 1W is the same bridge as No 70!
